Spending two days drilling our potential presidential candidates with national security questions and living amongst the media elite inside their posh exclusive Google/Fox “spin room” (the irony was not lost by any), I lost something. I had succumbed to the hype and was choosing between one of two candidates, two candidates of which I had little commonality. GoogleFox had successfully taken my personal individualistic choice of candidate away from me. I, the great Indy reporter, had become a lemming.
Herman Cain at Republican debate pledges to aggressively prosecute CAIR (Council on American Islamic Relations), ISNA (Islamic Society of North America), and NAIT (North American Islamic Trust) along with pledging to list the Muslim Brotherhood as a Designated Terrorist Organization.
As GoogleFox drilled into heads throughout the night Romney Perry Romney Perry, I just thought. “We have to beat Obama,” And annoying acronym seemed to blogally spread throughout the room, “ABO” (Anyone But Obama). A phrase I now realize was said in order to make our painful decision seemingly more palatable. Many conversations continued in this anti-Obama vein as we watched Governor Romney being handled by Sean, Bret, Megeyn and the other uber Fox elite, thus, making the “chosen one” quite unavailable to us average slug reporters. Then the question was asked, the one that powdered faces told us we could only ask, “Who do you like better; Romney or Perry?” with the obvious implication being, “That’s all you got, pal.”
“Well,” said one reporter. “Romney’s got the money, and if you ain’t got the money you ain’t going to win.”
“But he is nothing more than an Obama lite,” said another.
A female reporter said, “Yeah, but that leaves Perry and he is soft on immigration. He looked good at first but the more and more I know about him the more he makes my, I don’t know, skin crawl. I was just in one of these Perry love fest events. And when he asked his flock to pray together, they reached their hands out like he was a messiah or something. It was just creepy.”
“So who do you think can beat Obama?” I asked.
“It’s all about the money, and Romney’s getting the $500 haircuts.”
Another said, “But Perry will get the evangelical right to turn out in the general. If it’s Romney, they won’t get out of their chairs. There’s something in their DNA that won’t let them pull the lever for a Mormon.”
As we watched the spin doctors rip apart Perry, I became more and more frustrated at our choices and asked, “Okay, out of all the candidates who do you like personally? And forget about who’s ahead or who can beat Obama, which one jumps out at you and makes you wish he or she was one of the top two? Don’t over think this. Vote with heart not with your head!”
The conversation suddenly exploded, “I like Santorum. He nails everything.”
Senator Santorum holds Rep & Dem accountable on National Security issues.
“Cain! He turned businesses around. He made Burger King and Godfathers profitable again. And isn’t that what the country really needs?”
Herman Cain: Will Prosecute CAIR & List Brotherhood as Terrorist Org
“I really like Bachman, even though she is a bit whiney.”
“Newt! He’s the only true Reagan Republican. And he is very strong on the Islam thing.”
As the conversation bounced around between these four for a while, it suddenly hit me. No one was saying Romney and Perry – even though just moments earlier all were saying that’s all we got – including myself. I then decided to do an informal convention poll for the next two days to see if this was an anomaly. And what I found truly surprised me.
Note: In full disclosure I intentionally avoided the Ronbots who were accosting all who said hello to them – even though I like some of Ron Paul’s views on the economy. It simply was a matter of self-preservation.
The consensus was in this order, Santorum, Cain, Bachman and then Newt with all four individually beating out Perry and Romney. There was simply no real passionate support for Romney or Perry. Note: The Ronbots took that prize.
Now, this is not an endorsement of any candidate. It’s meant only to give you something to think about. Remember, It’s not over. Vote as an individual, vote who you want, and do it in the primary before it’s too late. Else, you will be forced to hold your nose and pull the lever as I will do. And if that happens, I fear four more years of Obama will be the result. So, vote with your heart not with your head and then let’s deal with the outcome.
